Beebe sets tone in Aurora Christian football’s victory

AURORA – Aurora Christian wide receiver Chad Beebe wasted no time Friday to let Raby know he would be a force to contend with.

The senior receiver, playing in his first game since breaking his left arm in Week Four, caught a Ryan McQuade pass on the first offensive play of the game and scored a 72-yard touchdown.

McQuade and Beebe connected two more times in the Eagles 49-12 rout of the Raiders in the opening round of the IHSA Class 3A playoffs.

“We broke him in early,” said Aurora Christian coach Don Beebe about his son, Chad. “I knew he was amped up, so I said let’s score on the first play.”

“By watching film, my dad knew that they had their safety playing so far to the right, so we had the play called to the left,” Chad Beebe said about the opening score. “I was wide open.”

Beebe also scored on Aurora Christian’s second and third possessions of the game. His second touchdown went for 26 yards and the third score was an eight-yard strike.

The Eagles (9-1) scored on all five of their first-quarter possessions

Their last two scores of the quarter were set up by the defense and special teams. Joel Bouagnon intercepted Raiders quarterback Chris Covington’s pass attempt and returned it to Raby’s 21-yard line. On the next play, Cory Windle grabbed a McQuade pass for the score.

On the ensuing kickoff return, the Raiders (6-3) fumbled and the Eagles’ Legend Smith recovered the ball on Raby’s 23-yard line. Three plays later, Brandon Mays ran one yard for the score.

Aurora Christian scored on its first possession of the second quarter. A Bouagnon 5-yard run four minutes into the quarter gave Aurora Christian a 42-0 lead.

The Eagles failed to score on their seventh possession when a Trevor Hills 34-yard field-goal attempt went wide to the left and turned the ball over to Raby.

On the Raiders’ first play in the series, Bouagnon picked off another Covington pass and returned it for a 19-yard touchdown.

Although Hills missed the field goal, his kicking made major contributions. He converted all seven extra-point attempts and three of his kickoffs went for touchbacks, forcing Raby to start from the 20-yard line.

The Raiders finally got on the scoreboard with 3:29 left in the first half. Covington connected with Maurice Earskines for a 31-yard touchdown pass.

“Our defense played really well,” Don Beebe said. “That quarterback is an athlete, and we really kind of neutralized that kid in the first half.”

The Raiders scored their only points of the second half on the first play of the third quarter when Covington connected with Terry McDonald for an 87-yard touchdown pass. Again, the two-point conversion failed.

After the Eagles scored their sixth touchdown, Beebe rested his starters. McQuade was six for 10 for 160 yards. Beebe had four receptions for 128 yards.

Bouagnon carried the ball nine times for 71 yards.
