CHICAGO – The Wheaton Academy boys soccer team knocked off Chicago Lake View, 1-0, in Tuesday’s IHSA Class 2A Chicago Solorio Supersectional.
The Warriors advance to Friday’s 2A state semifinal at Lincoln-Way North, where Peoria Notre Dame awaits in an 11 a.m. match.
“It’s exciting to do that,” Wheaton Academy coach Jeff Brooke said. “The guys are working hard. At one point [our record] stood at 6-5 and now we’re 21-6. The guys have put a lot of work in, and we’re proud of them.”
The match’s lone goal came late in the first half when Burlington Central transfer Grant Stoneman (28 goals on the season) converted a header off a Gareth Flynn corner kick.
“Gareth served the ball across, Stoneman was in traffic, got up and beat everyone to the ball,” Brooke said. “No deflection, just snuck it in the far post.”
Brooke said the wind was at Lake View’s back for the second half and the Warriors had to battle to cling to their lead as Lake View sent several free kicks into the box.
Class 3A Glenbard South Sectional: St. Francis had little trouble with Herscher, cruising in the sectional semifinal, 25-18, 25-16.
The Spartans advance to Thursday’s sectional title game against fellow powerhouse the Joliet Catholic Angel, which topped Nazareth Academy, 25-16, 25-21 in the other semifinal.
