Elburn officer hurt when clipped by car while directing traffic after crash

An Elburn police officer was hurt Monday night when, while trying to direct traffic after a crash, his right hand was clipped, apparently by the rear-view mirror of a passing car. Elburn Police Chief Steve Smith said the officer was treated at Delnor Hospital and released.

Smith said the officer sustained what was called "soft-tissue injury." Smith said there were no broken bones, but that the officer would have his arm in a sling. Smith declined to name the officer. The incident took place at about 6 p.m. near the intersection of Route 47 and Keslinger Road, Smith said.

"A tow truck was removing a vehicle," Smith said. "The officer was directing traffic, and a driver didn't see him and struck his right hand, presumably with the mirror of the car."

Smith said that there were several fire engines at the scene of the crash, as well as a tow truck.

"I'm sure there were distractions," he said.

As far as the other crash, Smith said there was enough damage that tow trucks were needed, but "it wasn't anything unusual as far as traffic crashes go."
