KCChronicle.com/preps Athlete of the Week: Kaneland cross country's Victoria Clinton

Published: Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012 5:31 a.m. CST

Kaneland sophomore Victoria Clinton shaved 45 seconds from her time at last season’s Class 2A girls cross country state meet. Her personal-record run of 16:56 at Peoria’s Detweiller Park on Saturday secured her the 2A individual title by 11 seconds, as well as instant celebrity in the school hallways. Clinton, the St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week, recently addressed her race with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley. The following is an edited transcript:

How much have you reflected on the race?

I’ve been really thankful that I could do it.

It’s a joy to compete and just run out there. It’s been really exciting to have accomplished this goal of mine.

Talk about the reception you’ve received in the hallways at school.

A lot of people congratulating me. It’s been a lot of fun. A lot of conversations going.

What’s your toughest class this semester?

I would have to go with biology. I just have trouble with the concepts sometimes, memorizing the specific details. It can be a tough subject to grasp.

What’s your favorite sports movie?

I like “Soul Surfer.” I like how Bethany [Hamilton] perseveres when times are tough and she relies on her faith and the Lord to help her. How she still goes out there, even with one arm, she goes out and trains hard. I like training hard, so I like that movie.
