Letter: The issue is money
To the Editor:
Looks like a face-off has finally arrived between Geneva teachers and the Geneva School District 304 board.
The issue, cutting to the chase, is money. The teachers want money that is not available and threaten to walk off the job if they don’t get what they want – clearly a self-serving position, made even more repulsive by their mantra that they’re doing it for “the kids.”
The economy and real estate values remain in shambles, and these already spoiled and pampered public servants aim to hold the board and – by extension – the beleaguered taxpayer hostage.
I say let ’em go on strike! Let’s see if they can find work in the private sector at the same cushy level of income, benefits and work schedule that they now enjoy.
I’m not really teacher “bashing” I’m sure most Geneva teachers are dedicated to their profession and truly have the best interests of their students at heart. I think this union mindset of let’s get all we can is a remnant of the Chicago teachers union strategy.
In that case, the board gave concessions it doesn’t know how it’s going to pay for – a result that just won’t work in Geneva.
