More than 68 percent of registered voters in Kane County cast ballots Tuesday, making it one of the largest voter turnouts in recent years.

"Any time you get over 50 percent, it's rewarding," Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham said. "I always want it to be more."

According to unofficial results from the clerk's office, 68.1 percent of registered voters cast their ballots Tuesday. That number does not include voters within the city limits of Aurora under the jurisdiction of the Aurora Board of Election Commission.

Voter turnout in Aurora Township was at 61.1 percent, according to the results from the clerk's office.

In comparison, only 21 percent of registered voters – excluding the Aurora Election Commission – cast a ballot in the March primary election.

"There's no question that a presidential election will bring out more people out to vote," Cunningham said.

With 52.8 percent of the vote in Kane County, Republican Mitt Romney topped President Barack Obama, who received 46.1 percent. That number excludes the area represented by the Aurora Election Commission. In that area, Obama beat Romney, 65.6 percent to 32.5 percent.

Tuesday's voter turnout fell short of the turnout for the 2008 presidential election, when 76.4 percent of registered voters in Kane County – minus the Aurora Election Commission – cast their votes.

Cunningham said his office was busy Tuesday answering phone calls from residents who were confused about what district they were in following recent state and congressional redistricting.
