Published: Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 5:30 a.m. CST

GENEVA – Geneva School District 304 officials announced if teachers strike today, the district will notify parents using its emergency notification system, 304Connects, local media and the district website, www.geneva304.org.

Students will not be required to attend school, but if they do, parents should call 630-463-3088, spell the child’s name and state the grade and school.

In a statement, Geneva High School Principal Thomas Rogers said the high school will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. if there is a work stoppage. Students dropped off by their parents should enter by the Mack Olson gym or contest gym because all other doors will be locked.

Early bird classes are canceled; the cafeteria will not be open for breakfast, but it will offer a limited lunch menu from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Students enrolled in Fox Valley Career Center courses should report to the high school first, and then ride the bus to the career center as normal. Driving to the career center is not allowed.

The fitness center and gyms will be open for students who wish to exercise.

The library will be open. National Honor Society students will tutor in the library from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Career Center in the Counseling and Advising Office will be open from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and two computer labs will be open each day for students who want to work on college applications or other items requiring technology.

Three films with educational value will be shown every two hours each day in the auditorium, beginning at 8 a.m. And a classroom will be available for quiet reading.

The fall play will go on as scheduled this weekend, but all other extracurricular activities, practices and contests will not be held on the days of a work stoppage.

According to an announcement by Principals Larry Bidlack and Terry Bleau, students going to middle school will attend Geneva Middle School South only.

They should bring comfortable clothes and gym shoes for physical activities, a spiral notebook, something to write with, a calculator, a novel, colored pencils or crayons, and an iPod/MP3 player.

During the physical activity portion of the day, students will have the option to use their iPod. Students can have cell phones in their back packs, but they should be turned off.

A limited menu of lunch items will be provided for purchase, and students can bring their lunch.

Activities to be canceled if teachers strike include the Veterans Day Ceremony – if the strike begins today – before and after school reading labs, athletic and intramural activities, before school music groups, the South PTO meeting Monday, the Jazz Band Concert on Tuesday, and Stellar Students ceremonies.
