Two St. Charles businesses fail liquor compliance checks

ST. CHARLES – In a recent liquor compliance check, employees of two St. Charles businesses sold alcohol to minors – a violation that could get the establishments in trouble with the St. Charles Liquor Commission, St. Charles Police Department spokesman Paul McCurtain said.

Wearing civilian clothing, police personnel accompanied 18- and 19-year-old civilian agents to 17 businesses Nov. 2 for the fourth-quarter compliance checks, McCurtain said.

Fifteen businesses passed inspection and will receive congratulatory letters of compliance from Chief Jim Lamkin, McCurtain said.

He said the two employees who sold or served alcohol to the underage agents were served with a notice to appear with a court date of Dec. 13 at the Kane County Branch Court.

They are Candice K. Widerski, 32, of the 1800 block of Larson Avenue, St. Charles, and Ileshkumar Shah, 42, of the 100 block of Horizon Circle, Carol Stream.

Widerski works at Wild Monk, 51 S. First St. Shah’s employer is Liquor & Wine, 2460 W. Main St.

The city ordinance violation can result in a fine, McCurtain said.

The violations also will be forwarded to the St. Charles Liquor Commission for its review, McCurtain said.

St. Charles police personnel check each liquor license holder for compliance every year, McCurtain said. He noted it is more manageable to do it quarterly than to check every business on the same day.

The police department is required to conduct the checks because it accepts funding from the state, McCurtain said. He said the civilian agents are trained by police and are paid for their training time and services.

Police also conduct tobacco compliance checks.
