Holidays extra special this year on area hoops scene
The first part of the basketball season is always highlighted by the holiday tournaments, and this year is going to be better than ever for area hoops teams.
The St. Charles East boys always start the season off right by hosting one of the state's best Thanksgiving tournaments. Looks like St. Joe's is back among the state's elite this year, and with teams like Downers Grove South, North Lawndale and Schaumburg also in the mix, it'll be another year of can't-miss action. Now if we can just get one of the St. Charles schools in the championship game one of these years!
Batavia's Windmill City Classic is another fun Thanksgiving week option in the area, and since Kaneland joined the field to add some extra local flair, it's an event that's all the more enjoyable for area hoops fans.
After a few weeks to jump into the regular part of the schedule, the holiday hoops merriment will return with vengeance come Christmas time.
For the second straight year, the St. Charles North boys are headed down to Pontiac, which might be the best holiday tourney in the state (if not the country).
Sly says "might" because Proviso West can make a pretty good case itself and, new to the expanded field this year are the Fighting Saints of St. Charles East.
Considering the caliber of holiday tournaments East and North play in, you have to grade both teams' records on a curve. Joe Lunardi would dig both teams' SOS.
Here's hoping area teams are ready to play at a high level this calendar year. The caliber of holiday tournaments ahead, especially for the STC schools, demands nothing less.
