School day still not canceled in District 304
GENEVA – School District 304 officials said in a news release Saturday that, despite the teachers union's declaration that teachers will strike on Monday, school has not yet been canceled for that day.
In the release, which district officials said was sent to families in the district, officials said in the event of a strike, they would "make every attempt to notify families by 5:30 a.m. on Monday, using the district's emergency notification system."
The sides are scheduled to negotiate on Sunday. Because of that, officials said, school would not be canceled.
"The Board of Education remains committed to negotiating an agreement that is good for students, fair to teachers and fiscally responsible, and is confident that a settlement can be reached," the statement said.
School would remain open on Monday in the event of a strike, but regular classes and most extracurricular activities would be canceled. Students would not be required or expected to attend. Specific entrances would be designated at each building, so that students could avoid picketing teachers.
