GLEN ELLYN – The two freshmen on the Batavia girls basketball varsity roster wasted little time making their presence felt Tuesday night in a 49-43 season-opening victory at Glenbard South.

Hannah Frazier scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Bulldogs and classmate Bethany Orman added 10 points.

“The freshmen are doing great,” Batavia senior Sami Villarreal said. “Hannah was our leading scorer and Bethany was our second-leading scorer. They’re a great addition to the team.”

Villarreal scored nine points, hitting a pair of three-pointers in the opening quarter as the Bulldogs raced to a 14-2 lead. Orman also hit a pair of treys as Batavia pushed to a 19-6 lead early in the second quarter.

“It’s probably fitting that my two high school coaches are here and all I did in high school was shoot threes,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said. “I [told them], ‘Man, our team loves to shoot threes.’ Fortunately, we had a couple girls hit them. Sami Villarreal hit some big shots early for us and was a good senior leader for us.”

The success of the Bulldogs outside opened up the inside, where Frazier did her damage. She scored on back-to-back nice moves in the post to give the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the night at 23-6.

“They started coming out and then the inside people were open,” Villarreal said of the Raider defense.

“I want us to be an inside-out team,” Jensen said. “But by default sometimes we're an outside-in team. It’s like that team that says they want to run the ball to set up the pass, but they really do it the opposite. That’s kind of where we’re at right now.”

Batavia displayed some solid man-to-man defense in the opening half, but Glenbard South finally got into an offensive rhythm in the final two minutes of the second quarter, cutting the Bulldog lead to 27-18 at the break.

Batavia appeared to be in good shape when Liza Fruendt’s bucket pushed the lead back to 11 early in the fourth quarter, but the Raiders refused to quit, finally whittling the lead down to one with 1:30 left in the game. But Miranda Grizaffi hit a pair of free throws with 42 seconds left to push the lead back to three.

Frazier, a 6-1 forward, finally iced the game for the Bulldogs with 7 seconds left, converting a nice pass from Jenny Welday into an old-fashioned three-point play.

“We just kind of had to hold on for dear life,” Jensen said. “Now we don’t play again until the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving down at the Morton tournament, so we’ve got a week or so to fix everything.”

Glenbard South junior forward Tomei Ball led all scorers in the game with 14 points.
