2012 Kane County Chronicle All-Area Boys Cross Country Team
Mike Bianchina, Geneva, Sr.
Limited in training as he recovered from a fractured left leg suffered during track sectionals last spring, Bianchina took 90th at the Class 3A state meet in 15:20 after running a personal-best 15:13 to place third at sectionals. “Had he not broken his leg,” coach Bob Thomson said, “I’m pretty confident he would have been an all-stater.”
Kyle Carter, Kaneland, Jr.
Carter overcame plenty – including an knee injury during the state series – to shave 23 seconds from his 2011 2A state meet time. His run of 15:22 helped the Knights to a 13th-place team finish. “Kyle brought our whole team’s level of training higher,” coach Chad Clarey said.
Spencer Gray, St. Charles North, Sr.
The Kane County Chronicle Runner of the Year isn’t sure whether he’ll run in college as a swimming career beckons. If this was his cross country swan song, an individual title at the UEC River meet, a runner-up finish at sectionals and a 45th-place run in the 3A state meet wasn’t a bad way to go out.
Trevor Hollis, Batavia, Sr.
Batavia’s lone representative at the 3A state meet at Peoria’s Detweiller Park, Hollis finished 62nd in 15:09, just seven seconds off the pace of Gray’s area-best time at the meet.
Conor Johnson, Kaneland, Sr.
“His senior leadership has been a major reason why we made it this far,” coach Chad Clarey said. After a solid regular season, Johnson’s state series included team-best runs at regionals (sixth) and state (36th).

COACH OF THE YEAR
Chad Clarey, Kaneland
Clarey guided the Knights to a 13th-place team finish at the 2A meet on the heels of top-five finishes in regionals and sectionals. Kaneland’s aggregate state time of 78:34 at Peoria’s Detweiller Park edged the school’s 1987 state champions by nine seconds. “There isn’t a trophy for what this team achieved, but there’s great satisfaction in knowing that their group set the new standard over another that was coach [Larry] Eddington’s greatest cross country team,” Clarey said, “Granted, we are twice the size of a school now than when Larry’s crew won in ‘87.”
