Our View: An emotional win for St. Francis volleyball

Published: Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 5:30 a.m. CDT

Congratulations to the St. Francis girls volleyball team, which won the IHSA Class 3A state championship last weekend.

The win notched the ninth state title for St. Francis under coach Peg Kopec, the winningest prep girls volleyball coach in Illinois history.

It was an emotional victory for the team, particularly for sophomore player Mary Boken, whose older sister Megan was shot and killed this summer in St. Louis.

Megan Boken had been a star player on the St. Francis volleyball team and was on the squad when the group won its last state title in 2006.

The tragedy of her death was felt by all – Mary Boken’s teammates rallied around her like sisters this season, and coach Kopec said that Megan Boken’s presence was felt by the group.

For a team to support a player going through a difficult time is admirable. For that team to win a state title is outstanding.

We applaud the St. Francis girls volleyball team for its exemplary performance this season. May they enjoy their victory.
