Our View: Averted strike a success for District 304 community

Two scenarios presented themselves in Geneva School District 304 as last weekend wound to a close.

Either classes would be in session Monday or they would not, with a potential teachers strike being the deciding factor.

Fortunately for all in the District 304 community, a strike was averted and classes took place Monday without interruption.

For this, we credit the school board and the Geneva Education Association. It certainly would not have been ideal for students to miss regular class time because of a strike. Children and teens only benefit from attending classes on a normal schedule.

But all is not finalized yet.

Though a tentative three-year agreement has been reached between the school board and teachers union, the board still has to approve the contract. That could take place Tuesday during a special meeting.

The Geneva teachers union did ratify the new contract Wednesday. Details of the deal will become publicly available once it is approved by the school board.

Once that happens, it will be time for all involved – board members, teachers, administrators, parents, volunteers and kids – to put 100 percent of their focus back on day-to-day district operations.
