Marcello Positano (from left), Adam Suto, Sean Seales and Ryan Brasley make up the four-member, local indie-rock band The Giving Moon.

ST. CHARLES – The Giving Moon, a local indie-rock band comprised of four freshmen from St. Charles East and North high schools, recently entered a teen battle of the bands contest via the National Association of Music Merchants, and were accepted into the semi-finals.

The grand prize for the contest is $5,000, which will be given to the St. Charles East music program if The Giving Moon bandmates receive a first-place finish.

In a recent news release, Ryan Brasley, the band’s drummer, said: “It would be a great honor to help raise money for our school music program. Our band uniforms are over 20 years old and we have to borrow drums from another high school for marching band performances.”

The first-place finisher will also merit a trip to Europe to perform in the 2013 SchoolJam Germany Finals.

Patrons can register and cast a daily vote for The Giving Moon at www.schooljamusa.com now through Nov. 30.

The band with the highest number of online votes will automatically win a minimum of $1,000 for its school music program.

If The Giving Moon earns a spot among the top eight bands, which are determined by the public vote and a panel of judges, they will proceed to the final rounds.

In the final rounds they will compete against seven other bands in front of a panel of judges at the NAMM show Jan. 26 at Downtown Disney in Anaheim, Calif.

The eight band finalists will also receive money to purchase gear for their band from a NAMM member music retailer, and additional funding for their school.

The Giving Moon formed in 2009 and its members are 14 to 15 years old.

Sean Seales is the band’s songwriter and vocalist and plays electric guitar; and Ryan Brasley is the band’s drummer. Seales and Brasley are freshman at St. Charles East, and are in the school’s jazz band.

Brasley also plays percussion in the concert band. Adam Suto plays the bass guitar and Marcello Positano is on rhythm guitar. Suto and Positano are freshman at St. Charles North.

The Giving Moon has entered battle of the bands competitions before. They recently won first place out of more than 100 bands in IAMFEST 2012 (the independent Artists and Musicians Festival sponsored by the Elbo Room in Chicago).

Upcoming live performances by The Giving Moon include a show scheduled for Nov. 23 at the Elbo Room, 2871 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago. The show will take place at 11 p.m. Tickets cost $10 and are available online at www.elboroomlive.com. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door.

The band is also in the process of recording its first album.
