Workouts go vertical at Geneva fitness studio
GENEVA – Tiger Lily Vertical Fitness & Dance in Geneva doesn’t offer a typical workout routine.
The women-only fitness studio taps into the sensual side of getting fit. As women reach more advanced levels, instructors start lifting the routine off the ground using poles and aerial silks, which are pieces of cloth suspended from the ceiling.
Tiger Lily Vertical Fitness & Dance opened about a year ago at 1749 Randall Road, Suite G.
Since then, Tiger Lily has offered “pole classes,” where each woman does exercises around a pole. As classes advance, new moves are introduced to work different parts of the body.
The business recently started offering an aerial sculpting class, which can increase flexibility and balance. “Fly Gyms,” or long pieces of fabric that can hold thousands of pounds, hang from the ceiling, and women use them to suspend themselves off the ground in different positions.
Caroline Patel, who co-owns the business with Sarah Ritzman, said Tiger Lily is the first pole fitness studio in the Tri-Cities area.
“We wanted to create a safe, comfortable place for women,” she said. “Our name, Tiger Lily, is how we feel about women. We’re strong, but we have a softer, sensual side.”
Patel said anyone can jump into a pole fitness routine, even if exercise hasn’t always been a regular regimen. The routine works the core, increases arm and leg strength, and helps with flexibility, she said.
“You’ll develop some muscles you didn’t know you had,” she said.
Patel said most women have a lot of leg strength, but not a lot of upper-body strength. Classes at Tiger Lily help give women long, lean muscles rather than stockier muscles.
Women who already do regular workouts, such as Pilates, gymnastics, kickboxing or dance, can also benefit from cross-training at Tiger Lily, Patel said.
“It’s intimidating, I think, for some people,” Patel said. “They think of the pole for strippers only. But it is a true fitness apparatus.”
