SCHAUMBURG – The St. Charles East girls basketball team was within seven points of perennial powerhouse Montini at halftime Thursday before the game spiraled as the Saints dropped the Schaumburg Thanksgiving Tournament matchup. 63-35.
East coach Lori Drumtra said the Saints took too many quick shots that gave Montini long rebounds and chances to run the floor.
“I feel we hurt ourselves quite a bit,” Drumtra said. “They play a 2-3 zone and kind of push you out a little but we were just shooting too quickly.”
In addition to having trouble with the Broncos’ 6-foot-4 center, Montini’s balance and depth also proved problematic for the Saints (0-2), who were within 26-19 at halftime.
“They do have a lot of talent, that’s for sure,” Drumtra said.
Senior guard Paige Jordan scored 12 points to pace East. The Saints resume tournament play at 10 a.m. Saturday against Rockford Boylan.
