GENEVA - A piece of furniture stored in a garage may have helped fuel a small fire on the city's east side Saturday afternoon.

At about 1:30 p.m., firefighters from Geneva, St. Charles, Batavia and Elburn responded to a report of a fire in a garage attached to a house in the 0-100 block of Briar Lane, southeast of the intersection of Route 38 and East Side Drive in Geneva.

Upon arrival, firefighters found "a small fire" burning in the garage, said Geneva Fire Department Lt. Kevin Forest.

Forest said firefighters believe the fire was centered on "a dresser or shelving storage unit" in the garage.

He said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but he said investigators thus far believe the fire to have been "accidental."

Forest said the Geneva department estimates the fire caused about $10,000 in damage to the home's structure and to contents of the garage.

He said the home remained habitable, and continues to be occupied, despite some smoke damage, as the fire did not enter the home's dwelling area.

Forest said about 30 firefighters from the four departments responded to the scene.

The fire was quickly extinguished, and firefighters remained on the scene until about 3 p.m. Saturday.
