Sugar Grove Library looking to expand hours
SUGAR GROVE – By January, the Sugar Grove Public Library could see its operating hours expand.
“We’re trying to see if we can stretch our staff to work in more hours,” library Director Carol Dolin said. ‘We are working within our budget.”
The Sugar Grove Library Board is set to discuss the expansion of library hours at its Dec. 13 meeting. The expanded hours, if approved, would go into effect Jan. 1, Dolin said.
The library is open 41 hours a week, and budget constraints prevent the library to be open more than 50 hours a week, Dolin said. It is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
The library is closed Sundays and Mondays. To gauge interest in expanding the library’s hours, library board trustees recently voted to survey patrons.
“The board would have to approve more hours,” Dolin said.
As part of the survey, which is posted on the library’s website at www.sugargrove.lib.il.us, patrons are asked several questions, including how late they would like the library to stay open as well as for their priorities on when the library should be open.
“Typically, libraries of this size are open between 72 to 75 hours a week,” Dolin said.
So far, 150 patrons have answered the survey, but the library would like that number to grow to 500. Patrons have until Dec. 1 to answer the survey, and library board trustees will review the results.
“We would like to get a fair representation of the district,” Dolin said.
Library officials already have an idea of what patrons would like to see.
“They would like to see more hours on weekends and Mondays,” she said. “They would like the library to be open for browsing and picking up reserved materials.”
