ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East wrestling team crushed rival St. Charles North on Wednesday, winning the Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual meet, 70-3.
There were no North forfeits – just an old-fashioned butt-kicking in the Saints’ favor.
“It really just matched up really well for us,” first-year East coach Jason Potter said. “Their best kids were against our top guys, and we went out there and handled them and wrestled up to our capabilities.”
Potter said sophomore Will Leite prevailed at heavyweight despite giving up about 60 pounds to his opponent. The Saints’ D.J. McDermott won a 2-1 decision at 120 pounds in his first varsity match.
North’s points came courtesy of Wes Pasholk, who won a hotly contested, 1-0 decision at 220 pounds against East’s Peter Banks.
Geneva 57, Wheaton Warrenville South 11: At Geneva, the Vikings won the four lightest classes and the seven heaviest classes to dominate Wheaton Warrenville South in a nonconference dual meet. Geneva’s Jake Boser won a 6-4 decision at 220 pounds and Jake Andersen won by fall at 285.
BOYS BASKETBALL
West Chicago Tournament: Marmion had a four-point lead in the fourth quarter but couldn’t handle King’s defensive traps, falling in pool play, 51-43.
Colin Kavanaugh (12 points) and Alex Theisen (nine) led Marmion (0-3).
Joliet West Tournament: Phil Schuetz had 22 points to lead Aurora Central Catholic, which pulled out a 70-67 thriller against Plainfield South.
Shawn Soris (12 points) hit a three-pointer to put ACC (1-1) up with about two minutes left, and Schuetz and Zach Flint also provided key points for the Chargers down the stretch.
West Chicago Tournament: Geneva ripped host West Chicago, 72-41, behind 21 points from sophomore Nate Navigato, 12 from senior Mike Trimble and 10 from senior Connor Chapman.
The Vikings (3-0) and Wildcats (2-1) were the tournament's last remaining unbeatens. Geneva continues tournament play Friday against Lake Zurich.
"We've been kind of waiting for a performance like this from our players," Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. "They really stepped it up tonight."

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Glenbard East Tournament: Crete-Monee defeated Geneva, 57-52, despite 14 points and 13 rebounds for Kelly Gordon. Morgan Seberger added 11 points for the Vikings (3-1), who lost Michaela Loebel to an undetermined first-half knee injury.
In other tournament action, Glenbard West defeated Rosary, 40-33. The Royals (2-3) were paced by 12 points from Rachel Choice. Emily Bakala added nine points.
