Cruz appointed as Kane County associate judge

GENEVA – An Aurora lawyer has been appointed as Kane County's newest judge.

Monday, Illinois' 16th Judicial Circuit announced that the circuit's judges had voted to appoint Rene Cruz, of Aurora, to the bench as an associate judge within the circuit.

In a release announcing the appointment, court administrators said Cruz was selected from a field of three dozen judge candidates.

Doug Naughton, court administrator for Kane County, said Cruz will be assigned to Family Court at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township.

Naughton said Cruz should begin hearing cases on Dec. 3.

Cruz is the first of four such appointed judges that court administrators have said will be appointed to Kane County's bench by February.

The identities of the other three prospective judges have yet to be revealed.

Cruz, a partner in the firm of Gil and Cruz in Aurora, has practiced law for 17 years, according to a biography included with the release announcing his judicial appointment.

Cruz began his career as an associated with the firm of Morelli, Cook and Peterson, in Aurora, before moving on to the firm of Barbosa and Gil.

He is a graduate of The Citadel Military College in South Carolina, and of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
