District 303 superintendent gets last contract OK'd

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles School District 303 board Monday night approved what will be Superintendent Don Schlomann’s final contract with the district.

“That was his desire,” board president Steve Spurling said. “We’ve been very happy with him.”

The contract covers the 2013-2017 school years, putting Schlomann at 61 when it ends, he said. He will have been with the district 10 years – a long amount in superintendent time, he said.

He joined D-303 in 2007, coming from Belvidere Community Unit School District 100. The previous superintendent, Barbara Erwin, had left the district amid controversy after about three years.

Schlomann described his time so far as an “extremely great opportunity” and said it is too early to say what he plans to do next.

“Four years is still a long time, yet,” he said.

The board approved the contract, 6-1, during a special meeting. Corinne Pierog cast the dissenting vote.

Spurling called the contract fair.

It wasn’t released in its entirety Monday, but some terms were noted in the resolution the board passed. It indicated there is no increase in his $225,000 base salary – the amount he started at in 2007.

“He does lead by example,” Spurling said, noting other employee groups have also taken pay freezes in recent years.

The contract extension does include an annual retirement incentive annuity in the amount of a 6 percent increase in compensation – a benefit Schlomann said is generous.

According to the resolution, Schlomann met the goals outlined in his 2011-2013 contract. Under that contract, he – with assistance from his administrative team – was to evaluate student performance, review the district’s curriculum and instructional services and report to the board on those topics, making recommendations when necessary.

Schlomann’s full contract should soon be posted to the district’s website, www.d303.org.

Teacher contract talks also are expected to begin this winter. The union and school board ratified the current contract in January 2011. It expires at the end of this school year.
