Holiday activities set in Sugar Grove

SUGAR GROVE – Volunteers have packed Saturday’s Holiday in the Grove event with various activities, including breakfast with Santa, a craft fair and cookies with Mrs. Claus.

“They can make a whole day of it,” organizer Julie Wilson said.

Activities are planned at the Sugar Grove Community Building, 141 S. Main St., until 1 p.m.; John Shields School, 85 Main St., until 3 p.m.; and the Sugar Grove Public Library, 125 S. Municipal Drive, until 6 p.m. The United Methodist Church, 176 Main St., will host Mrs. Santa’s Sweet Shoppe.

Visiting the community building, library and school can pay off. Children 12 and younger will get a raffle ticket if they get a stamp at each of those sites, plus an additional one at the community building.

There are about $200 in prizes, including passes to a water park and amusement center, Wilson said.

Holiday in the Grove events are free except for breakfast with Santa, which is $5 a person, Wilson said, noting that proceeds benefit local families in need.

Space for the sausage and pancake breakfast is still available at 8, 9 and 10 a.m., she said. She is taking verbal reservations at 630-649-3458. The breakfast will be at the Sugar Grove Community Building with police and fire volunteers doing the cooking, she said.

A cake walk also is planned, and organizers still are accepting donations of cookies, cupcakes and cakes to ensure there will be enough sweets for participants.

The baked goods will be accepted Friday at the Sugar Grove Community Building, Wilson said, adding that any help would be greatly appreciated.

Volunteers will be welcomed for setup on Friday at the community building and after 8 p.m. at John Shields Elementary School, organizer Marguerite Ledone said.

Wilson said help also would be accepted for next year’s event.

“We are in desperate need of committee members,” she said.

Interested individuals should be willing to work year-round, meeting about once a month, Wilson said. She’s sure the committee could find new members a job.

“Maybe two,” she said.
