Why he was selected: Shump swept his competition from Downers Grove South, Lane Tech and Naperville Central at a Saturday quadrangular to reach 100 career victories. Two of the wins came by fall.

Batavia senior 126-pound wrestler Joel Shump became the ninth Bulldogs athlete to attain 100 career victories with three wins at Saturday's Naperville Central Quad. Shump, the St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week, enters Thursday's home dual against Geneva with a 6-0 record this season. Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley caught up with Shump, whose junior season was cut short due to injury, about his recent surge. The following is an edited transcript:

How have you reflected on reaching 100 victories since it happened? It was pretty good. It should have happened by the end of last year, but it felt good to get it out of the way early this year. … I knew I was coming up this weekend that I had 97, and by the end of it I had 100. It took all three.

What was the reaction from your teammates like? I didn't talk to many guys about it, but afterward coach [Scott Bayer] congratulated me and when we met after the last dual in the quad he told them all about it in the team meeting.

What's your toughest class this semester? My pre-calculus class. ... I've never really been a math guy, but I'm buckling down and doing really well now.

How about your favorite sports movie? I don't really like sports movies. … They can be kind of predictable. … I like "Little Nicky." I like all the classic Adam Sandler movies.
