KCChronicle.com/preps Athlete of the Week: Batavia wrestler Joel Shump
Why he was selected: Shump swept his competition from Downers Grove South, Lane Tech and Naperville Central at a Saturday quadrangular to reach 100 career victories. Two of the wins came by fall.
Batavia senior 126-pound wrestler Joel Shump became the ninth Bulldogs athlete to attain 100 career victories with three wins at Saturday's Naperville Central Quad. Shump, the St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week, enters Thursday's home dual against Geneva with a 6-0 record this season. Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley caught up with Shump, whose junior season was cut short due to injury, about his recent surge. The following is an edited transcript:
How have you reflected on reaching 100 victories since it happened?
It was pretty good. It should have happened by the end of last year, but it felt good to get it out of the way early this year. … I knew I was coming up this weekend that I had 97, and by the end of it I had 100. It took all three.
