Lagattolla: Cookies galore at Kaneville United fundraiser

KANEVILLE – Hundreds of dozens of cookies will be served up in Kaneville on Saturday, part of a holiday tradition that is in its 22nd year.

The Kaneville United Methodist Church Women have planned their annual Cookie Walk, which starts at 9 a.m. and is set to run until 11 a.m. at the church, at 46W764 Main Street Road. Sandy Gould, one of the organizers of the event, said there’s a good chance the cookies – more than 600 dozen of them – won’t last until 11 a.m.

“A lot of people want to be the first ones through and get the best ones,” Gould said.

Gould said those who go should expect a line to form, at least by 8:30 a.m. And the first in line traditionally has been a girl, now 10, from Clarendon Hills, who would spend the night with her grandmother so that she could be first in line.

“She’ll be the first one,” Gould said.

Gould was among those who have been helping with the event since it began. Each year, she said, the cookies are donated by those with the church. Gould made her 10 dozen cookies – holiday cutouts and buck-eyes (peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate) – on Monday night.

The proceeds raised can be as much as $2,000, and Gould said the members will meet to select where the donation will go. In past years, the money has gone to a wheelchair for a child or families in need.

As in recent years, those who stop by can buy fudge and peanut brittle, as well. Cookies are sold for $8 a pound.

Customers can bring their own containers, and Gould said organizers will head to Harner’s in North Aurora to pick up bakery boxes that can be used.

“This is really a joyful event,” she said. “It puts everybody into the Christmas spirit, and it’s fun to do. You can make a considerable amount of money in a short time.”

Customers can expect to see long tables set up in the basement, “just as full as you can make them,” Gould said.

“And we keep replenishing,” Gould said.
