Letter: They just don't care

To the Editor:

Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, after receiving taxpayer support for his shiny new stadium, cut payroll from $118 million to $30 million by completing a 12-player deal with the Blue Jays. Obviously, he won’t return this money to the taxpayers in South Florida or significantly reduce ticket prices to draw new fans. And, he apparently, has no desire to add expensive talent to the team after just dumping salaries.

Once again, we see the folly of taxpayers supporting rich owners of sports teams enabling them to build or refurbish their stadiums. That money is never returned when they sell or move the teams. And, like the Marlins and the Cubs, the owners don’t really care about the quality of the team or the expectations and/or support of the fans. It is simply another example of millionaires, who constantly complain about taxes, receiving public subsidies to make more money.
