QUINCY – The Batavia boys basketball team led for much of the game Saturday night but couldn't finish the game off against Quincy, falling, 50-42.
The Bulldogs (2-3) were down three with the ball with 1:25 to play before Quincy put the game away.
"We had trouble closing it out but I'm encouraged," Batavia coach Jim Nazos said. "I thought we took some strides here today. We're a team that played better than we did last night [against Geneva]."
Micah Coffey (12 points, three assists), Jake Pollack (11 points, five rebounds) and Zach Strittmatter (10 points, eight rebounds) paced Batavia.
Nazos called the atmosphere in Quincy's gym "one of the best in the state of Illinois," but was proud of how well the Bulldogs maintained their composure.
Burney Wilkie Classic: Aurora Christian defeated Montini, 61-38, to win the Burney Wilkie Classic. Cory Windle (19 points) and Ryan McQuade (17) paced the Eagles.
Batavia 73, Elgin 36: At Elgin, Batavia shrugged off a 10-9 deficit after the first quarter and routed Elgin. Erin Bayram (16 points) and Hannah Frazier and Liza Fruendt (13 each) led the way for the Bulldogs (5-3, 2-1 UEC River).
Chicago Christian 61, Wheaton Academy 53: At West Chicago, Wheaton Academy fell behind 24-10 after the first quarter and couldn't come all the way back.
Kaneland splits triangular meet: Kaneland defeated Lemont, 54-21, but was nipped by Plano, 36-35, in a triangular. Knights 113-pounder Stephen Gust won his match against Plano by tech fall and prevailed against Lemont via pin.
Geneva splits at South Elgin: Geneva beat host South Elgin, 44-34, but fell to Downers Grove North, 41-24, in a triangular. Tony Castelvecchi won both of his matches at 170 pounds for the Vikings.
Naperville North Quad: Batavia lost all three matches, falling to Sandburg, Lyons and host Naperville North. The Naperville North match was a 37-36 squeaker as the Bulldogs had to take a forfeit in the final match at 132 pounds. Batavia was ahead in the match, 30-19, after consecutive wins by Mitchell Krusz (heavyweight) and Michael Doranski (106 pounds).
