Why he was selected: Gust won both of his matches Saturday as part of his 5-1 start to the season.
Kaneland wrestler Stephen Gust had to stay home from school after being slowed by illness early this week, but his opponents Saturday weren’t fortunate enough to get a reprieve. Gust dominated opposition from Plano and Lemont at a triangular meet that the Knights split. The wins were part of a hot start to the season for the 113-pounder, who is the St. Charles Bank & Trust-Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week. Gust touched base with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab about his successful weekend. The following is an edited transcript:
What’s your take on how the first few weeks have gone? It’s going good. I don’t know, 5-1 is a decent start to the season. I’m not happy about the loss.
You won a couple bouts on Saturday – how difficult were those opponents? They were all right. I handled them pretty well, I thought. I won my first match by pin and my second match by tech falling the guy, so I did well.
Do you have a go-to move? Not particularly.
How about a favorite sports movie? No, not really.
What’s your toughest class this semester? Probably AP Spanish.
