Chef Alain Roby stands near his "tallest chocolate sculpture" creation. Roby holds two Guinness World Records and is looking to create a third this weekend – world's longest sugar cane.

For Geneva chef Alain Roby, two Guinness World Records aren’t enough. That’s why he’ll attempt to set his third world record this weekend.

Roby already holds world records for creating the world’s tallest cooked sugar building at 12 feet, 10 inches, as well as putting together the largest chocolate sculpture at 20 feet, 8 inches.

Now, this holiday season, he plans to piece together the world’s longest sugar cane at 45 feet. The decorated dessert and pastry chef owns Geneva’s All Chocolate Kitchen, a compilation of everything he’s worked on for the past 35 years in the industry.

Q: What made you want to go for a third Guinness World Record?

A: The reason why I started the third one was to give back to the community that has just been so amazing to us. In this difficult time, the supporters we have in the community and the people and the chamber of commerce has been great. My way of saying ‘thank you’ is to make a centerpiece to give something back. This is my profession and what I love to do, and it’s my only way to give it back. All Chocolate Kitchen is going to donate the sugar cane – we’re going to break it down and people can take it home for the holidays. That’s 45 feet of sugar cane we’re going to shatter with a hammer and give it to the crowd.

Q: What kind of work goes into creating something like this?

A: It’s a lot of planning and a lot of support from the town. The city of Geneva is going to close one whole block for us, so the police of Geneva have been helpful, the mayor has been helpful, and the mayor is going to help explain everything that’s going on. All the sponsors have helped, too – Little Traveler, Midwest Import, Mossy Twig, Banners Up, Lebin Financial Planning and the Geneva Chamber of Commerce. It takes a lot of support and a lot of help to do something like this. We already started the sugar cooking, but everything is going to be put together and welded in front of the people. Hopefully the weather is nice because the sugar cane could shatter. We’re hoping to weld everything together within an hour.

Q: What’s the previous record you have to break?

A: It was set a while ago, but it’s 40 feet. We are going to try to beat it by five feet. I may even go another five feet, I don’t know yet. I could just go 41 feet just to tease them, but that wouldn’t be very nice.

Q: What’s next for you?

A: I have something else for next year, but it’s top secret. I think it’s going to involve the whole community, especially families. I might give a hint at the ceremony when we reveal how long the sugar cane is.
