Hultgren announces science caucus; Biggert responds to unemployment report

Congressman Randy Hultgren, IL-14, has announced the formation of the House Science and National Labs Caucus.

Hultgren is joined by Congressmen Chaka Fattah, Ben Ray Lujan and Alan Nunnelee, who will serve as co-chairs of the new group, with other members of the 113th Congress expected to join next year.

The new caucus will be concentrate on reinforcing federal investment in research and the national laboratories, as well as raise awareness in and out of Congress about the role they play in long-term economic growth, according to a news release.

“These laboratories, much like the rest of the economy, deserve certainty from the government so they can continue their important work with confidence,” Hultgren said in the release.

U.S. Rep.Judy Biggert, IL-13, issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Labor reported that the economy picked up 146,000 jobs in November and that the unemployment rate last month dropped to 7.7 percent from 7.9 percent in October.

“It’s the season to count our blessings, including modest job growth, but it’s far too early to celebrate when this could be our last month before a massive tax hike pushes unemployment back into double digits," she said in the release. "Despite holiday hiring last month, 122,000 individuals lost their jobs and almost 350,000 Americans gave up looking for work. The president and Congress must work together now to avert the fiscal cliff, give employers the certainty to hire, and provide relief to middle-class families. These negotiations can be successful, and Republican leaders have made substantial concessions on tax revenue, but both sides need to find common ground on where to cut spending, and the White House needs to recognize that higher taxes on small businesses will not help job growth.”
