Sound Off: Something for nothing

It’s time to blink

In the Tom Clancy novel “The Hunt for Red October,” there is a scene in which Russian and American submarines are charging toward each other, each trying to avoid a runaway torpedo, hoping it will hit the other submarine. The captain of the American submarine makes the comment that in a game of chicken, you have to know when to blink. The submarines are the two political parties – the Democrats, including President Obama, and the GOP, refusing to show weakness or blinking with the upcoming fiscal crisis. However, both political parties must watch out for the runaway torpedo, which is the American debt. When the U.S. needs to borrow 40 cents out of every dollar spent for payments to unemployment, food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid and congressional salaries, someone had better blink. There is not enough economic growth to sustain tax increases and the continued out-of-control spending, which is why there will be a collision between the submarines, and only the out-of-control torpedo will survive.

Now what, Mr. Obama?

Remember when Mr. Obama was gloating that he saved General Motors but was harshly criticizing Mitt Romney for investing in companies that invest in China. What would Mr. Obama say now that General Motors plans to invest $1 billion in China. How would the great spin master spin that one?

Let them play

What a wonderful opportunity for three young men from the South Sudan to be given an education at Mooseheart. What a tragic error in judgment by the Hinckley-Big Rock School District, and especially [athletic director] Bill Sambrookes, to value winning a basketball game over freedom of expression. Perhaps Sambrookes and the Hinckley school district need to re-evaluate what sportsmanship is all about.

Driver’s license plan is outrageous

People have entered this country illegally, or perhaps entered legally and stayed beyond their legal time limit, so now are here living in our state illegally, driving illegally without licenses or insurance. Our state senators and representatives use the excuse that our roads will be safer for all of us if Illinois offers driver’s licenses to these illegal immigrants. Obtaining a driver’s license requires one to take written and driving tests, which they say would make the roads safer. They say we need to provide the opportunity for these illegal immigrants to obey the law. Seriously? These illegal immigrants have already shown they don’t care about an opportunity to obey the law, since they disobeyed our current immigration laws and remain in this country illegally. Yet now our state expects them to jump at the opportunity to take written and driving tests and pay higher fines for no insurance, when they are currently driving without licenses and insurance anyway. All people are welcome to emigrate to this great country and become citizens by following our immigration laws and living here legally. Giving illegal immigrants privileges specific to citizens is outrageous.

What do you think of people using fireworks near their homes?

That shouldn't be tolerated. It's dangerous.
I'd never do it, but I'll watch others.
It's OK so long as the fireworks are legal.
It's not a problem. It's just a way to celebrate.
I have no opinion.
