BATAVIA – Rebecca Rohan of Batavia snatched up the boxes of Hostess orange cupcakes, chocolate Zingers and vanilla Zingers as soon as she saw them Wednesday at the Batavia Jewel-Osco.
“But I didn’t get what I wanted: Twinkies,” Rohan said.
Rohan had arrived at the store about two hours too late. The store sold out of the spongy cakes by 8:30 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a shipment of the Hostess products earlier that day.
Shoppers were picking up Hostess products from the final shipment sold at Chicago-area Jewel stores this week. Hostess Brands went out of business last month after a strike by its bakers union.
Rohan wasn’t too disappointed that she didn’t get her hands on a box of Twinkies.
“It is what it is,” she said.
Sally Zagroba of Streamwood, who works in the area, also decided to buy a few boxes of orange cupcakes and Zingers while she was shopping at the store.
“My grandchildren are coming over, and I thought it would be a surprise for them,” he said.
She was a fan of Hostess chocolate cupcakes. And she is fearful about how they will taste if another company ends up buying Hostess brands.
“If they come back, they won’t be the same,” Zagroba said.
