Rockets launching ahead of schedule

The Burlington Central girls basketball team is 9-1 with seven freshmen and sophomores among its 10-person roster.

That's really something, and you've got to give plenty of credit, too, to new Rockets coach Mark Smith.

The former St. Charles North boys basketball coach has these youngsters playing at a way higher level than anyone could reasonably expect so soon into their high school careers.

It will be interesting to see how the Rockets fare once they get deeper into conference play, not to mention in a pair of nonconference games against local teams Kaneland and St. Charles North.

It would be won thing is Central was a program used to major success, but the Rockets have been pretty quiet in recent years, making it all the more remarkable that they're tearing it up in a season with a new coach and so many youngsters.

The Rockets are on pace for a 20-win season, but even if they fall short of a banner year along those lines, there's no doubt this is a program with some huge upside in the years to come.
