ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles bar and grill has nearly doubled in size after a recent remodel, and with that expansion came more seating, more flat-screen televisions and a much larger tap beer selection.
Nathan Pauley, general manager at the Tap House Grill, 3341 W. Main St., said the bar and grill closed for a little more than two weeks to expand into about 1,500 square feet of space next door. The restaurant officially re-opened Nov. 30 after closing temporarily for the remodel.
“We opened on a Friday and we were packed wall to wall,” he said. “People were just waiting to come back in.”
The expansion created space for private parties of up to 65 people. Pauley said the space will soon include a 120-inch projector screen for business meetings, noting the space has already been booked up for a Super Bowl party. For every $100 spent in the party room, the host gets a $25 gift card, Pauley said.
The dining room also expanded and now seats almost 80 more people who can now enjoy the six additional flat-screen televisions scattered around the restaurant. The bar area now seats up to 25 people – more than double the seating.
Pauley said the decor didn’t change much.
“We wanted to keep the same decor – that homey feeling with dark woods,” he said. “We didn’t want to lose the whole feeling of the neighborhood bar where you can get upscale food and craft beer.”
To accompany a larger bar area are 20 additional craft beers on tap, bringing the total selection to 40. Some new additions include Founder’s Breakfast Stout, Anti-Hero IPA, Golden Monkey and a holiday beer called Fistmas.
Through Christmas, the Tap House Grill is featuring the 12 Beers of Xmas, where guests can fill a punch card by purchasing holiday-themed beers, such as Great Lakes Christmas Ale and Sierra Nevada Celebration. Guests with 12 punches on a card can win prizes ranging from stocking caps to a fleece sweater.
Pauley said he tries to offer beer from local breweries, offering some tap beer made in Warrenville and Chicago.
Though the bar and grill has undergone a lot of changes, one charity effort that started last year will continue in the new year. Pauley said that each month, the restaurant selects a nonprofit organization to raise money for. In the past year, the business has raised money for breast cancer, autism and Alzheimer’s awareness.
Pauley said they eclipsed their goal of raising a total of $5,000 for charities by raising a total of about $7,500 last year. For every $5 a guest donates, he or she receives a name placard on the wall and a free appetizer card.
The menu for the Tap House Grill, where the motto is “addictive food, creative brews,” remains the same because it was recently revamped. Pauley said because many of the foods are beer-infused and the restaurant has such a wide variety of beer, all servers are Cicerone certified, which means they passed a test to be able to serve beer.
The St. Charles location has been open for six years and was the first of seven Tap House Grill restaurants to open. Other restaurants are located in Oswego, Plainfield, Glen Ellyn, Westmont, Highwood and Lemont.
