Wine, Cheese and Trees
event to support reforestation

GENEVA – The City of Geneva’s Natural Resources Committee in conjunction with the Western Avenue Get Up and Grow Committee at Western Avenue School is hosting a fundraising event in support of a reforestation program and an edible schoolyard garden in Geneva.

The fundraising event known as Wine, Cheese and Trees will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Geneva History Center, 113 S. 3rd St., Geneva.

Gibby’s Wine Den will serve wine, which will be accompanied by cheese and chocolate from area merchants.

The event will also feature appetizers, music, a “wine wall,” raffles and a silent auction.

The Committee’s proceeds from the event will go toward the “Greening Geneva” initiative. The new initiative is being implemented because of an Emerald Ash Borer infestation that is expected to cause about 2,800 ash trees in Geneva’s parkways to be removed over the next few years.

The Natural Resources Committee has pledged to help rebuild the urban canopy of Geneva, and the fundraiser is a first step toward that reforestation program, according to a news release.

The Western Avenue Get Up and Grow Committee will use its proceeds for an edible Garden at Western Avenue School, which was started in spring 2011.

Tickets cost $50 a person and can be purchased at the history center, the Geneva Chamber of Commerce and through Western Avenue School’s website at geneva304.org/was.
