ECC facility to be built in Burlington

ELGIN – Construction of Elgin Community College’s public safety and sustainability center is expected to begin in spring in Burlington, according to a news release from the college.

The $18 million facility will house the college’s energy management, truck driving and firefighter and police training programs. It will include a burn tower, tactical village and wind turbine on an 118-acre site on Plank Road.

ECC plans to buy the land for about $1.63 million.

“Over 80 percent of first responders are trained by community colleges,” ECC President David Sam said in the release. “We are excited by our partnership with Burlington and our opportunity to offer top-notch training for our local first responders.”

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by fall 2014. A timeframe has not been determined for the second phase, which will include a gun range and other academic buildings.
