Role reversal in Geneva

It hasn't been uncommon for a Geneva basketball team to start a season with a flashy record like 10-1. But for it to be the Geneva boys rather than the Geneva girls with a record like that, well, that is certainly a new twist.

The Vikings swallowed up St. Charles North on Friday to continue their great start.

Sly'll acknowledge, Geneva hasn't played the toughest schedule so far, but a double-digit win at North is pretty impressive, and even if you're playing lukewarm competition, winning 10 of 11 games means you're pretty cut-in as a basketball team.

Besides, the Vikings' strength of schedule is about to get quite a bit tougher as the Vikes test the waters at the East Aurora Christmas tourney, where plenty of quality opposition awaits.

Geneva will probably take a lump (or two or three) at that tournament, but as long as the Vikings keep their workmanlike approach, they could stay right with East (the only team to beat them so far) and Larkin (the only River team they haven't yet faced) as the River race rolls along.

Back to the Geneva girls, the ladies' character is being tested this season, between injury and some very close, disappointing losses - struggling to stay above .500 is not usually the Geneva girls' lot in life.

But the Lady Vikes still have the firepower to get on a hot streak in January and February, and figure to be a tough out in the postseason if they can get a little smoother at handling end-of-game situations. With their record the way it is, they will probably be underseeded when it comes time for the playoffs, and provide a nasty draw for some good team with lousy luck.

By the end of the season, the Geneva girls and boys records might well look a lot closer than they do at the moment, but for now, give the Geneva guys their due ... 10 wins before Christmas is downright jolly.
