PLANO – The Burlington Central boys basketball team forced turnovers on Newark's first four possessions Saturday, building an early 10-point lead in its Plano Christmas Classic opener.

As the Rockets' box-and-one against Newark's Brett Anderson grew more successful, however, the rest of the Norsemen emerged. BC lost, 61-49, despite holding Anderson to 13 points, nine below his season average.

"I thought we had some lapses defensively on our rotations," Rockets coach Brett Porto said. "We gave some guys open looks that I wish we could have contested more. They're a pretty solid team. I saw them at Sycamore [in a Thanksgiving tournament]. Anderson has been hitting about 22 a game. You've gotta take something away. Unfortunately, their role guys stepped up tonight."

Central (3-8) was led by Moter Deng (13 points) and Ryan Ritchie (10).

In other tournament play, Aurora Christian defeated Streator, 63-54, after trailing by a point entering the fourth quarter.

Cory Windle had 12 points and 14 rebounds for the 6-4 Eagles. Ryan Suttle (21 points) and Haydn McNelis (11) also finished in double figures.

Geneva 36, Maine East 21: At Park Ridge, Geneva stifled the Blue Demons' deliberate offense, limiting the hosts to 15 points until the final two minutes.

"Maine East kind of took the air out of the ball," Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. "They kind of did to us what we have the tendency to do to other people."

Geneva (11-1) was led by Nate Navigato with 10 points. The Vikings were ahead, 17-7, at halftime.

"We probably played less time in that game than it took us to get there," Ralston said.

DeKalb Chuck Dayton Tournament – Marmion 68, Geneseo 61 (2OT): Marmion outscored Geneseo, 8-1, in the second overtime to improve to 4-8. The Cadets snapped a three-game losing streak.

Wheaton Academy 68, Walther Lutheran 49: At West Chicago, Wheaton Academy rolled in the Suburban Christian Conference crossover to move to 9-1 overall and 6-0 at home. Gordon Behr scored 22 points to pace the Warriors.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Ottawa Tournament – Pontiac 43, Kaneland 39: Kaneland limited Pontiac to four free throws in the fourth quarter, but that defense did not offset the Knights' own 2 for 17 shooting down the stretch of the tournament's fifth-place game.

Ashley Prost tallied 10 points for the Knights (9-5). Allyson O'Herron and Marina Schaefer added nine points and five rebounds apiece.

WRESTLING

Kaneland 2-1 at quad: At Woodstock, Kaneland thumped Woodstock (52-18) and Richmond-Burton (51-9) while suffering a narrow, 37-30, loss to Mundelein in a road quadrangular. Nick Sharp notched a fall and a major decision for the Knights at 220 pounds.
