BATAVIA – A Batavia couple plans to bring a taste of Italy to North River Street next year.

Andrea and Tora Chiappelli in February plan to open an Italian gelato cafe, O’Sole Mio, at 27 N. River St. in the building that formerly housed the offices of U.S. Congressman Bill Foster. Antonio Natale of Carol Stream also is a partner in the business.

O’Sole Mio will serve gelato, which is the Italian version of ice cream.

“It’s been a huge part of the culture out there,” Tora Chiappelli said. “We wanted to introduce the real thing to this country.”

Her husband, Andrea Chiappelli, is from Italy. The couple received training from Carpigiani Gelato University in Italy.

“Italy approaches its gelato very scientifically,” she said.

O’Sole Mio also will serve beer and wine along with mixed drinks. The Batavia City Council last week approved a liquor license for the cafe. The cafe plans to have a soft opening in February, with a grand opening planned for March to coincide with the planned celebration of the newly completed streetscape improvements along North River Street.

Tora Chiappelli said she hopes O’Sole Mio will complement the restaurants along North River Street, such as Pal Joey’s. The Chiappellis live next to Pal Joey’s owner John Hamel in Batavia.

O’Sole Mio is not the only new restaurant that will open in downtown Batavia next year. Open Range Southwest Grillat Bliss Creek Golf Club in Sugar Grove, is opening a second location in the former Lodge on the Fox restaurant at Houston and North Water streets in downtown Batavia.

Plans are to open the Batavia location Jan. 4, Open Range chef proprietor Greg Slager said.

The restaurant will emphasis barbecue and southwest flavor, Slager said, but will sell other items such as pizza and calzones. Open Range also will sell a variety of craft beers. More information is available at www.openrangegrill.com.
