St. Charles Dollar Store to shut down

ST. CHARLES – The Valley Shopping Center in western St. Charles has one more storefront to fill.

The Dollar Store, 1535 W. Main St., on Wednesday began a going-out-of-business sale in which the sundry goods are up to 50 percent off. Manager Craig Mayberry said a date has not been set for the independent store’s last day.

“It could be weeks,” he said. “It could be shorter.”

The Dollar Store opened in the Valley Shopping Center about four years ago, filling the vacancy Aldi created when it relocated to a new store on Main Street west of Randall Road.

Mayberry, who has worked at the Dollar Store since July 2011, said he could not comment about why it is closing. He said it is the only store the owners own.

Other businesses in the Valley Shopping Center include a liquor store, a Thai restaurant, a barber shop, a bank, a dry cleaner, a fitness center and a pet store. Vacancies include the former Play It Again Sports, Grimm’s Hallmark and Grimm’s Home Healthcare Equipment and Supplies.

“Our challenge now is to fill a few empty spaces,” said Bob Hoge, the shopping center’s property manager.

The property’s leasing agent has some leads, he said. Investors recently bought the old post office building, he said, adding he is waiting to see their plans for the property.

As for the Dollar Store location, Hoge said, “It is ideally set up for a grocery store.”
