Batavia's Joey Shump looks to lock up with Elgin's Charlie Wiltgen during their 126-pound match Friday in Batavia.

BATAVIA – Batavia stayed alive in a long-shot bid to repeat as Upstate Eight Conference River Division wrestling champions Friday with a 44-33 dual victory against Elgin.

The Bulldogs (4-1 UEC River) and conference-leading St. Charles East (5-0) both have one UEC River dual remaining. Batavia is holding out hopes of a possible tie for the conference crown after the Saints won last month’s head-to-head meeting, 43-24.

Against Elgin, Batavia dominated the middle and higher weight classes after the Maroons won four of the five bouts from 106 to 132 pounds. Standout senior Joel Shump notched the Bulldogs’ lone win at that span with a major decision at 126.

Batavia collected three falls the rest of the way, as Marc Goodin (145), Connor McKeehan (220) and Mitchell Krusz (285) had pins. Noah Frazier added a major decision at 182.

Marian Catholic 65, Marmion 42: At Chicago Heights, Marmion couldn’t hang with state-ranked Marian Catholic. The Cadets fall to 5-11 on the season.

Burlington Central 46, Marengo 21: At Burlington, Central held Marengo to two first quarter points and dominated the Big Northern Conference East matchup. The Rockets (14-2, 5-0), who have won 11 of their last 12 games, were led by sophomore Alison Colby (14 points) and freshman Shelby Holt (12 points).

“We put good pressure on their guards, and that’s kind of been the key to our success,” said Central coach Mark Smith, whose Rockets face Kaneland at 4 p.m. today.
