Officials investigate the scene of a fatal crash on Route 25, north of Banbury Road, in Batavia on Monday morning.

BATAVIA – Investigators are looking into whether icy road conditions were a factor in a two-car collision that killed a St. Charles man Monday morning near Batavia.

Karl Smith, 45, of St. Charles, was driving a 2005 Ford Expedition north on Route 25, just north of the intersection of Banbury Road, at 9 a.m., when his car spun out of control.

The Expedition crossed into the southbound lane and struck a 2005 Honda Accord, which was driven by a 60-year-old Batavia woman. The woman was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The Expedition then veered off the road and flipped onto its roof, Kane County Sheriff's Office Lt. Pat Gengler said. Smith was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire personnel. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gengler said he does not know whether that stretch of Route 25 was icy at the time of the collision, but black ice was present on other Batavia area roads Monday.

The Kane County Crash Reconstruction Team and the Kane County Sheriff's Office are investigating the crash, and it's unknown whether speed, drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.

"It does take a little time for them to do what they do," Gengler said. "We are waiting for toxicology to come back. It could be a month before we know anything."

Gengler said it doesn't appear there will be any criminal charges related to the investigation. Route 25 was closed between Bond Drive and Banbury Road about two hours during the investigation.
