Saturday's prep roundup: Kaneland wrestling wins own tourney...again

MAPLE PARK – Host Kaneland boasted six champions among 14 weight classes Saturday, comfortably winning the Margaret Flott Invitational wrestling tournament for the fourth consecutive season.

The Knights' champs included Connor Williams (120 pounds), Esai Ponce (132), Sonny Horn (138), Dan Goress (145), Zack Russell (160) and Zach Theis (285).

"We've got a lot of seniors, and they're leading the way in what we're hoping is a strong stretch run and postseason," Kaneland coach Monty Jahns said.

Kaneland also had four runners-up. Elgin placed second in the team race.

Geneva 0-3 at Lockport Mega Duals: At Lockport, Geneva fell to Neuqua Valley (39-24), Metea Valley (34-32) and Plainfield Central (47-15) in its final tune-up before the Upstate Eight Conference tournament at Batavia next weekend.

Brad Martens (120), Tony Castelvecchi (160) and  Jake Boser (182/195) were triple-winners for the Vikings.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Rockford East 78, Marmion 66:
At Aurora, Marmion trailed by 10 points at the break and was unable to draw closer, falling to 5-13. Jordan Glasgow paced three Cadets in double figures, scoring 20 points. Tyler Maryanski (11) and Mike Sheehan (10) were next.

St. Francis 45, Glenbard South 36: At Glen Ellyn, Andrew Kimball (13 points) and Kevin McShea (11) sparked St. Francis in its first game since Dec. 29. The Spartans improved to 11-2.

Naperville North Shootout: Oswego East 61, Wheaton Academy 58: Gordon Behr led Wheaton Academy (12-4) with 19 points in defeat. Brandon Ruggles (11) and Collin Roy (10) also finished in double figures.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Ottawa 50, Kaneland 30:
At Ottawa, Kaneland struggled to a 6 of 23 effort from the free-throw line in a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover. Ashley Prost scored 10 points for the 11-7 Knights, while Vanessa Gould contributed five points and five rebounds.

Aurora Christian 50, Chicago Christian 39: At Palos Heights, Alyssa Andersen's 20 points led Aurora Christian (14-6, 4-2 SCC Gold). Alex Hultine added nine points for the Eagles.

Walther Lutheran 51, Rosary 38: At Melrose Park, Rosary fell to 10-10 and 4-3 in the SCC Blue.

Marian Central 50, Wheaton Academy 39: At Woodstock, Jamie Netzley flirted with a triple-double for Wheaton Academy in an SCC loss, contributing 12 points, nine steals and eight rebounds.
