Man charged in false robbery complaint in Geneva

GENEVA – A Chicago man was charged with two felonies for allegedly making a false report of an armed robbery to police and making a false 911 call, according to Geneva police.

Derrick L. Orr, 25, of the 100 block of North Mason Street, also was charged, Jan. 9 with criminal damage to government property, also a felony.

Each felony carries a penalty of between one and three years in prison and fines of up to $25,000.

According to police reports, Orr called 911 from his cell phone to report an armed robbery, saying that his wife had her purse snatched while they were in front of Dick's Sporting Goods, 618 Commons Drive, and the man was running toward Crate and Barrel, "armed with something metal."

Geneva and St. Charles police both responded, but did not find anything, according to reports. Then the call was lost, and they could not reconnect.

Tri-Com Central Dispatch used a global positioning system to find that the call originated from the northwest corner of Randall and Bricher roads, reports state. But police on the scene saw nothing like a crime, a robbery, a victim or a witness or the caller, reports state, leading them to determine it was a false complaint.

St. Charles police later located Derrick Orr in the Lowe's parking lot, and he was charged.

Orr was released after posting $500 bond, 10 percent of bail set at $5,000. His next court date is Jan. 18.
