Prep roundup: ACC holds off Glenbard East in girls basketball

AURORA – The Aurora Central Catholic team held off Glenbard East’s rally on Tuesday night, prevailing in the nonconference clash, 39-37.

A late turnover by ACC gave the surging Rams a chance to win it but Glenbard East’s long 3-point try before the buzzer was no good.

“We didn’t take care of the ball at a very key moment,” Chargers coach Mark Fitzgerald said. “We didn’t have a very good night. Some of our kids made some turnovers in key spots. It was hot in there, it was muggy, we just didn’t have that mojo going tonight, but we had enough to close it out, I guess.”

Alex DeCraene scored 19 points for ACC (12-11), which has won four of its past five games.

“It was a down night for the majority of the regulars that play,” Fitzgerald said. “Just like in that third place game at state (last year), [DeCraene] kind of took the team on her back.”

The Chargers return to action today as they seek a season split against rival Rosary.

Paw Paw 40, Mooseheart 12: At Mooseheart, Kami Kolb scored four points to lead Mooseheart (1-18) in the nonconference defeat.

Burlington Central 49, Marengo 40: At Marengo, Rebecca Gerke and Samantha Pryor scored 10 points apiece to lead Central to the Big Northern Conference East win.

Burlington Central 63, North Boone 24: At Poplar Grove, Ryan Ritchie scored 11 points and Moter Deng had nine points for Central (7-13, 5-1 Big Northern Conference East), which had 11 players score on the night.

St. Francis 56, Chicago Christian 46: At Palos Heights, Andrew Kimball scored 22 points and Tim Zettinger added 15 to lead St. Francis (16-3) to the Suburban Christian Conference crossover victory.

Wheaton Academy 54, Immaculate Conception 38: At Elmhurst, Wheaton Academy rolled in the SCC crossover. Josh Ruggles and Gordon Behr had 12 points apiece for Wheaton Academy (15-5).

Winnebago 70, Aurora Christian 57: Johnathan Harrell scored 25 points and Ryan Suttle had 14 points but Aurora Christian was unable to hand unbeaten Winnebago a loss in the nonconference game.

The Eagles trailed by five points with four minutes to go but could get no closer.
