Police urge caution on snow-covered roads

Police officials are reporting cars in ditches and minor crashes on the roads today as a steady snow has led to sloppy driving conditions in the Tri-Cities area.

Also, Kaneland School District 302 officials canceled all after-school activities because of the snowy conditions. And law-enforcement officials advise people to avoid driving if possible. The National Weather Advisory issued a winter weather advisory, which is in effect until midnight. Heavy snow is forecast.

Lt. Pat Gengler, the spokesman for the Kane County Sheriff's Department, said that, if possible, people should "stay where you are when you get there. There is no need to go out in the weather if you don't have to."

Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said there have been several accidents in the last few hours.

"The roads are not only slippery, but they have a lot of slush, which adds to the problem," Nash said.

If people must be on the roads, she said, they should exercise caution.

"As with any winter driving, drivers should give themselves extra time to get to where they are going," Nash said. "The best thing that drivers can do is slow up. With the mix of rain, snow and cold, the roads are very slippery. Again, give yourself extra time and put distance between you and the vehicle in front of you."
