Geneva girls b-ball believes in prime number

Text Size: AaAaAaAaAa

The Geneva girls basketball team recently unveiled an "I believe in 31" postgame team chant that's performed to the tune of the familiar "I believe that we will win".

Vikings senior post Sami Pawlak, who wears jersey number 31, confirmed she was not the inspiration, and she and her teammates aren't yet divulging much more.

"As much as everyone asks that, no, it's not about me," Pawlak said, grinning. "It's a secret. We're not going to tell anyone."

Per the math, Geneva is not chanting about a pursuit of 31 victories, either. The Vikings, 19-10, face Wheaton Warrenville South in a 4A Bartlett Sectional semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday, but even a run to a state championship would put the Vikings at 24 wins.

What is clear: Geneva begins play in its fifth straight sectional in less than 24 hours.

"I love this team," Pawlak said. "I'm glad it's not over."
