Kaneland Connection: Elburn Lions Club readies for free dinner

The Elburn Lions Club dishes out free spaghetti on the fourth Tuesday of every month, and club member Chris Halsey said all are welcome. The dinners have drawn good crowds of people, who come for various reasons.

It’s free, so it’s perfect for those who otherwise cannot afford to dine out. Also, the Elburn Lions have cooked for those who were interested in joining the state’s largest Lions Club. And, Halsey said, there are those who want to mingle and enjoy a meal with other local residents.

The dinners are at 5 p.m., and the next dinner is Tuesday.

“The way it’s set up is that anyone in the Kaneland community can come to it,” Halsey said. “Just come out and eat and enjoy it.”

Halsey said those who want to donate can put money in a tip jar, and the money collected has covered the cost.

Halsey said each spaghetti dinner is a big event. He’ll start at 2 p.m., getting the sauce ready. Garlic bread will be prepared, and then the pasta is cooked. It’s a lot of work, but he enjoys it.

“It’s a good time,” he said. “Anything we do down at the club, we try to have fun doing it. It makes everything a whole lot easier. … It’s just a good time.”

So far, he said, the largest turnout for a spaghetti dinner has been about 80, and members are hoping that number goes up.

It’s just one of the events the club offers. There is bingo at 5 p.m. Fridays. Halsey said the club has welcomed a dozen new members from bingo in recent months. Then there are major activities. An Easter egg hunt and breakfast is set for March 23. A Texas hold ’em tournament is set for April 20. And in August, Elburn Days will be celebrated.

Halsey said members join by invitation. There are several requirements. Members must work at three events, which Halsey said is easy because bingo takes place every week. And there is a 20- to 30-minute orientation that Halsey runs. Those interested can apply. Details are available online at
