GENEVA – Aldermen Tuesday unanimously approved an agreement to participate with a federal agency to resurface 1.44 miles of Western Avenue, from Fabyan Parkway to South Street.

The estimated cost of the project is $667,667, of which $500,000 will come from a federal grant and the remaining $167,667 will come from Geneva’s capital improvement program, officials said.

City Administrator Mary McKittrick said the city applied for and was approved for the grant to pay for the bulk of the work to resurface Western Avenue.

Mayor Kevin Burns said the improvements will be from curb to curb.

“I think those who traverse Western Avenue regularly will be pleased to see the improvements, not only in the road surface but also in the striping,” Burns said. “As we all know it is a heavily traveled corridor and any improvements we can make for the motoring public and the bicycling and pedestrian is always well appreciated.”

The agreement also calls for the Illinois Department of Transportation to let and award bids and manage the payments while city staff will provide in-house inspection of the work, officials said.

The resurfacing project is scheduled to begin later this spring because bids are expected to be let in April.
