ELGIN – The Mooseheart boys basketball team played without two of its starters and only played “OK,” according to coach Ron Ahrens.
But it didn’t matter Tuesday night as the Red Ramblers dominated Faith Lutheran. 74-40, in their postseason opener. Things get more difficult tonight, when Mooseheart gets Westminster Christian at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinal round of the Class 1A Westminster Christian Regional.
“I’m sick to my stomach having to play them for a third time,” Ahrens said.
Mangisto Deng led the way with 20 points while Hameed Odenewu scored 18. Makur Puou added 12 for Mooseheart (22-5), which “didn’t have a lot of energy,” according to Ahrens.
Kevin Gbadebo and Peter Kurowski didn’t play for Mooseheart. Ahrens said one of the missing players was out for disciplinary reasons.
Riverside-Brookfield 63, St. Charles East 60: At Riverside, East (15-10) dropped a close one in nonconference play.
East and R-B were tied at 42 at the end of three quarters. Jake Asquini led the Saints with 18 points, all from 3-point land. Dom Adduci added 14 points and had four assists and Cole Gentry added 13 points and four assists for East.
Aurora Central Catholic 84, Montini 72: At Aurora, Phil Schuetz scored 22 points and Mike O’Donnell had 18 as ACC (14-12) won the Suburban Christian Conference crossover.
UEC crossover matchups set: Matchups for the regular-season closing Upstate Eight Conference crossovers this week have been solidified.
Among the Tri-Cities teams, on Thursday night, St. Charles North will visit Metea Valley, St. Charles East will visit Waubonsie Valley and Batavia will visit Lake Park.
The crossover between Geneva and host Bartlett will be Friday since Bartlett is hosting a girls basketball sectional championship game on Thursday.
Dual team state tournament: Marmion advanced to Saturday’s dual team state tournament at Bloomington’s U.S. Cellular Coliseum with a 37-22 win against St. Rita at the Hinsdale South Sectional. The Cadets will face Minooka in a state quarterfinal at 11 a.m. Saturday, with potential semifinals (2 p.m.) and finals (6 p.m.) scheduled for later in the day.
The Cadets clinched the program’s first dual team sectional berth earlier this month, when 13 of 14 athletes advanced from the individual Naperville Central Regional, which Marmion won handily with a team score of 244.
Marmion and St. Rita boasted five combined place-winners from the individual state tournament in Champaign this past weekend, including Cadets’ state champions Johnny Jimenez (120) and George Fisher (132), both of St. Charles.
